Welcome to the blog

I'm a frontend engineer and designer by trade but I'll be writing about things outside of the web too. Stay tuned for content about woodworking, bikes, running, hiking, and more.

Main goal: Use this site as a brain dump for the things I’m learning

My hobbies and passions are a bit all over the place and there is only so much info I can keep in my head at once. Rather than rely on my imperfect memory for things or hunt through a variety of notebooks and note apps, I’m hoping this site will serve as my second brain and reference point when I need a refresher. If I take some time away from Figma and am trying to remember my process for adding component variants, I want to be able to pop over to a post I had written about it to get myself back up to speed.

Learn and experiment with new tech

Reading about the latest frameworks on Twitter only gets you so far. At a certain point you have to get your hands dirty. This site will be my playground for testing out bringing new tech into projects. In my blog post about what I built this site with, I talk about using the blog as an opportunity to finally try out Tailwind. I’ve been loving Tailwind and can’t believe it took me so long to really give it a shot so this blog is already a success.

Teaching is a great way to learn

I’ll be writing how-to’s and tutorials like my post about preventing layout shift when adding a border to an element’s hover state. If I can’t explain something in a blog post yet, that means I don’t fully understand it. I’m hoping this blog will be a tool for me to deepen my understanding of certain topics simply by clarifying my thoughts in one place. Future me will be following these tutorials when I need to remember how I solved certain problems.

What I’ll be writing about

Web Dev

I mostly work on the fronted but I’ll be dabbling in some backend tech too (stay tuned for a post about tracking down a caching bug though memcached logs that cut our average response time in half). I’ll also be writing about the what, why, and hows for features and improvements I make to this site along the way.

Design

Since I work on the web, I end up doing a lot of UI/UX for work. My passion for design doesn’t stop there though. Whether it’s graphic design, photography, architecture, or industrial design, I can’t get enough of all things design.

Woodworking

After years of living in cramped apartments in San Francisco, I finally have a garage to build a shop in. My planned first project: building out a workbench and cabinets.

Next steps

My goal is at least one post a week but I’m epecting to average more than that once I get rolling.
